"The Owner's Manual for Your Life"

Flexibility Training

Flexibility is necessary to maintaining health.  Flexibility is our first defense against athletic and work related injuries.  The vast majority of damage to muscles and connective tissue can be eliminated by increased flexibility. There are three things I can tell you about flexibility training, yoga, yoga, and yoga. Nothing even comes close to yoga for flexibility training. You can choose exercises that work the areas you want to work. You don't have to do the asana (poses) you don't like. And it works wonders. I went for fifteen years with a lower back problem, after a week of yoga it was dramatically better, after three weeks it was completely healed and hasn't bothered me a bit since.

Yoga is also great for reaching ideal weight. If you go check out an aerobics class and then go check out a yoga class you'll probably notice that on average the students in the yoga class are much closer to their ideal weight than those in the aerobics class.

I'm not planning to offer yoga instruction on this site in the near future. I'm new to yoga myself and don't feel I yet have the necessary expertise and there are already lots of resources available. There are books, DVD's or videotapes, websites and probably classes available in your area. Here, in no particular order, are some of the websites I've found helpful.

Yoga can be approached a lot of defferent ways, if you don't like one way; go shopping for another. Like all of our exercising, find ways to incorporate your yoga training in ways that improve your life and make you look forward to it. Exercise in the most beautiful surroundings you can. Maybe out in the garden or a quite spot in a nearby park or forest preserve. Wear comfortable clothes that you enjoy wearing. Listen to music if that works for you (yes, I know, yoga purists will yell at me for this one but I'd rather have people do things less rigously and do them than to have them hate doing it 'right' and quit.). If working with friends helps; do that. Make it your own. Do it the way it works best for you. If you approach it this way you'll see great flexibility gains very quickly. It's your life.
